From the neglected old neighborhood to the urban and creative space with lots of cultural events, Savamala is one of the oldest parts of the city, the former nodal point for infrastructure and trade routes. In Savamala are some of the most beautiful examples of architecture from the 19th and 20th century along with a few relics of the Ottoman Empire. After repeated air strikes of '41 and ‘44, and the decision to build Novi Beograd across the river, Savamala district fell into a state of negligence and decadency developing bad reputation were to find marginalized people like prostitutes and criminals of the city. Today, after more than 30 years, after the former socialist regime under Tito, and more than ten years after the Balkan wars in the 90s, the state of degradation of Savamala is improving due to many creative people moving to this area that is still shabby and polluted. Cultural events such as the Cultural Center Grad (KC GRAD), Mikser Festival, and the design Incubator Nova Iskra are the pioneers of taking Savamala into its new improved direction. The tour will show you the city in the bohemian and contemporary perspective guiding you to underground and avant-garde places.
